The Best Parts Of Being A Man: Fatherhood

A man, teaching others to be men.  It’s a respected attribute among head coaches in professional sports, workplace management, and honestly the older you get its a quality that you simply must demand of ones you call your friends.  Even if you have the opportunity to practice in one of the above mentioned aspects, it still doesn’t compare to giving the game to your child, especially your son.  No one is rooting for them to succeed more than you.  As their biggest fan, you have the opportunity to make sure that as you mold their worlds views with your wisdom and morals, they make the best of it.

Sometimes I find myself trying to remember what my father told me about certain things, how to handle certain situations.  While there are not many examples that spring to mind that were verbal, there are an overabundance of actions that I do recall.  Every anniversary I saw him do nice things for my mother.   I watched the ways he came to the aid of family and friends, no matter the inconvenience to himself.  I noticed his forceful yet logical way of arguing his point right or wrong.  Those and many other things today manifest themselves in my actions and thought patterns whether I want them to or not.

Taking what I learned, putting my mix in it and serving it to my child is great privilege. For the past 3 years one of the best parts of being a man has been teaching my son.  Showing him how to hold a toy basketball when you shoot it, how to brush his teeth and peeing in the toilet..in that order, is fun and frustrating at the same time. He’s just a kid, but not for long. I know my job is never done.  Knowing that in order for him to be better then I have to be better, is one of the most sobering things to realize.  If you’re a man then you’ll understand.
