“And I don’t wear jerseys, I’m 30 plus. Gimme a crisp pair of jeans nigga, button ups”- Jay Z on “What More Can I Say”
We would be way out of line to even have a “Style Icon” section mind omit Jay. Seriously. Where we’re you when you first heard the aforementioned quote? I was in my Ford Explorer with the two 12’s in the back. I wasn’t close to 30 years old, but the statement was just as powerful: “Jerseys are out, tailor up your clothes.” Why? Because that’s what William H. Wallace (let the reader discern) decided was going to happen. And we all followed right along. Nevermind that he owned a STREETWEAR Brand named Rocawear OR that all of his listeners wore it. When Mr. H to the Izzo (Let the reader use discernment) speaks, people listen. He also partnered with Reebok to create the S. Carter brand of shoes modeled after Gucci sneakers ( which I happen to be an owner of) and they quickly hit cult status.
Fast forward to the now (The Black Album is almost 10 years old now) and his style is just as, if not more presidential than ever. Usually spotted at State dinners with President Obama or courtside at Nets games, Jay looks just as comfortable in Marc Jacobs tailored 3 piece suits as he does in 6″ wheats (let the reader use discernment). The reason Jay is an icon is, as usual, summed up by the man himself. “Hov’s a living legend and I’ll tell you why: everybody wanna be Hov, and Hov still alive” -Jay Z on Never Let Me Down off Kanye West’s College Dropout
Fresh Always,
Mr. H
