I’ve spent the better part of my life watching and playing basketball. I’ve also spent the better part of my time loving the NBA, getting attached to certain players. Some of these players had amazing careers and have set records giving us highlight moments we will never forget. More recently my fondness has grown toward Mr. James Harden, even since college when he was beastin’ at AZ State I recognized the skills. I still like him, even though he’s recently given me cause not to. We already know, “The Bearded One”, signed with the Houston Rockets for 5 million dollars more than what the Thunder offered him, and I got beef with that for a couple reasons.
I like watching the good match-ups, I like the good team rivalries. When I was growing up it wasn’t Jordan vs. Ewing but rather it was the Bulls vs. Knicks that had me glued to Marv Albert with the NBA ON NBC theme music getting me hype. I thought after last year’s season the new rivalry for years to come would be the Heat and the Thunder. Thunder are young and athletic. Heat are young and DWade is in his prime right now as well, so that’s what I was looking forward to. Also they each had a big 3. Now that Harden removed himself from that equation I have to go back to my predictions drawing board.
I wanna know what chance he realistically has at winning that’s better than he had at OKC. He’s richer yeah, but he took 3 steps back in terms of actually contending. His workload was quite simple if you ask me. He was to sit there patiently while Westbrook and Durant did their thing, quite handily. Then all he had to do was play with fresh legs in and get buckets in 4 minute bursts, which he was great at. Now I could see if he had put in like 6 or 7 years of work in a Thunder jersey then when they couldn’t see eye to eye about his worth, he dipped. With only 3 years in, it seems a bit audacious. I’ve seen way too many players piss away years in places they had no business because the dollars were right. More than my selfish fansmanship, I just didn’t want that for him. Hopefully he’ll prove me wrong.
