I Got Beef (With Alicia Keys)

For this installment of a new segment I’m trying to get off the ground, I have no choice but to place an American Icon right in the middle of the cross hairs. Who inspired such a drastic post? Who jumped in front of this speeding bullet? None other than the incomparable Alicia Keys herself. Why you ask? Let me explain…

Alicia hit the scene like a missile when I was in high school, back in 2000. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was an 18-year-old with a soft spot for light-skinned girls who were “well endowed” in the hip area and she was the embodiment of the movement. It didn’t hurt that she had cornrows and sang like a cherub from the throne of God himself with baby hair slicker than Ginuwine…. Jesus, Alicia Keys is fine…. but that ain’t what this is about dang it; and I have to stick to the script. Her music was unlike anything else I had ever heard and as I found out, I wasn’t alone. This was even before we found out she used proactive, she was simply flawless.

Ms. Keys seemed to take so naturally to singing those “women’s empowerment anthems” that made women with 4 kids and no man get off welfare and into college. Songs that made men (especially ones with the same hairstyle as her) sing their hearts out at karaoke bars. She was an American Idol, before Simon came across the water. She was the bomb. Remember ” Like You’ll Never See Me Again”, “If I Ain’t Got You” and “A Woman’s Worth”? Those songs sat at the top of the charts forever and changed the psyche of millions of people. So why did her behavior turn “Unthinkable”?

I’m nobody’s marriage counselor, and would be the first to tell you it is without fail the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. With that being said, Mashonda went on Love And Hip Hop and said that Alicia was dating her HUSBAND Swizz Beatz and that she found this out on the front page of a tabloid. Then Alicia throws a fairy tale wedding with dude, like it’s the purest dream come true ever! I can’t be the only person who thinks that is a little ratchet. Not solely because he was a married man and dismissed his wife (read: LIFE partner) for another woman, but because she’s the FACE of women’s anthems. The reason I got beef is because that’s hypocritical from where I’m sitting. And yes, I know there are 3 sides to every story and this one isn’t technically my business anyway but still; I felt the need to get this off my chest. I can’t buy her music anymore because I no longer believe in her message. Am I being judgemental? Probably. But It’s my $15.99

My Thoughts,
