Pack Your Age

Some things evolve with you as you get older.  You may start taking better of your car with age.  You may begin noticing exercise is more important as time goes on.  As they should, even the smaller things in life get looked at a little more closely.  Not on the level of being obsessive compulsive though, just refined.

Well as you get older probably your vacations get better too, and with that what should also improve is the quality of your packing.  I had to take a look this myself.  I was always the one packing WAY too much, because I was undecided on what to bring.  I was guilty of  hunting for the nearest drug store or Wal-Mart for toiletries and small items that I’d already owned but too lazy to pack. Maybe you’ve never done any of these things and I’m the weirdo.  That’s cool.  But still here are some things to keep in mind next time you out your PTO to good use.

The Over Packer – This means you have a lot of options but are unsure about the exact pairings for outfits.  No need to bring them all.  Why not bring things articles that are versatile and compromise.  It’ll ease the stress knowing you can bring one blazer and dress it up or down and still look appropriate at the bar or work meeting.  Same goes for certain sweaters.

“I’ll Buy It When I Get There” – If you’ve said that you’ve wasted money you could put to better use while away.  Deodorant, toothbrush/paste, socks, undershirts.  Maybe you’ve spent $30 on items before you even check in to the hotel. Cost adds up, and you already have them at home.  I was lazy once, but never again.

Reducing Wrinkles – I’ve found that rolling instead of folding things like t-shirts or gym shorts for example, keep the time on the iron down, and saves room in the suitcase.

Be Aware – It’s just good planning to know what the weather is going to be like, check the forecast.  You may save yourself some space by not guessing about what you might need.  Also you might want to take notice of your airline’s weight requirements for bags.  Next thing you know you’re pulling out underwear in front of TSA trying to hit the mark.

Keep Toiletries Separate – Cologne, lotions and anything that can stain, shouldn’t share the same space as clothes.  You should have a separate pocket and if not a regular plastic bag will suffice to create the needed barrier to prevent accidents.

I’ve fallen victim to some of these and other packing mistakes, but a little attention to detail can go a long way.  Do whatever necessary to cut money spent, stress gained and time wasted so you can devote more energy to making a great trip. Peace.
