Let’s Be Real, Your Kid Aint Special

I repeat, YOU’RE KID AIN’T SPECIAL! What would  make a man like myself, who doesnt even have children, say something like this? Well, I’ve been seeing a lot of coddling lately and it has me sick to my stomach. In little league baseball, they’re giving the LAST PLACE team a trophy too??? Are you kidding me??? Only winners get a trophy. You, son, are not deserving of a trophy. Why not you ask? Because you didn’t WIN. I can’t help but feel like this is part of the problem with our society. We reward underachieving. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose because everybody gets a trophy. That is absolutely ridiculous.

Last year, the Miami Heat lost in 6 games to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals and the whole world blasted Lebron James. “He’s soft” they said. “The moment was too big for him” people like Skip Bayless jeered. And you know why? Because he didn’t win on the biggest stage. So whether harsh or not, the criticism was warranted because there is no reward for second place. And you know what? Something is telling me that his Regular season MVP, Finals MVP, and NBA Championship ring is even sweeter right now than it would’ve been. He EARNED IT, and not even his biggest hater can take that away from him.

Fast forward to today. There is a black president of the United States of America. A Woman is Secretary of State. Black’s can drink from whatever water fountain they want. But don’t get it twisted; while strides have been made: your kid aint special. You can give him all the “you can be whatever you want to be” speeches in the world, but if he doesn’t graduate high school and college, HE AIN’T GONNA BE PRESIDENT. You got a daughter thats 4’9″ and 290 lbs? She aint walking no runway in Milan. Sorry. You would be best served to tell them the truth: That you love them no matter what and to maximize the talents they were born with by trying really hard in a field that they actually have a chance to succeed in. I hate to be blunt (I’m lying) but it’s the truth. I have always loved basketball more than anything else in my life, but the truth is I’m not tall, I’m not fast, and I dont jump high. I do have a great memory though, and my parents focused my attention on that when I was younger, and I turned it into a full ride college scholarship. There’s more than one way to reach a goal for sure, the most important thing here is that the initial goal is realistic. Your kid ain’t special, except to you. So give him a fighting chance. Tell him the truth.

Yours Truly,

Mr. H
